The high response under the right foot, the soothing vibration, the changing engine sound with the rise of the rpm, the flowing of power... The S2000-only, inline-4, DOHC VTEC engine is gentle on the environment, but with its wonderful characteristics, heightens the relationship between man & machine.
Even more power. Even more clean-burning. With those as goals, the 2-liter, inline-4 carries an impressive load of specs. Extremely high 11.7 compression ratio, Japan's 2000 smog law compliant, rev-limit at 9,000rpm, 250ps/8,300rpm... As we chased after high power, we put emphasis on how we got there. The graph below shows how we have taken a normal two-dimensional, full-throttle performance graph, and added another axis to measure throttle position, to make a three-dimensional graph. Notice that there aren't any unusual dips in the graph at all. This ensures ample torque throughout the powerband at ANY throttle position - whether on the track, or just cruising around town. The wonderful engine response - from cruising to accelerating, or just flat-out full-throttle - the response will surely enhance the relationship between man & machine. Also, with the smaller camgear, and the narrower valve angle, the head is made more compactly. Added to this, the serpentine auxiliary belt, and chain-driven camshafts allow for a head that is not as long. Compared to standard two liter, DOHC VTEC's, the S2000 engine is shorter in width and length, and is considerably lighter. The lighter engine helps the overall mobility of the car. |
